Kuwait to eliminate illegal mosques
The Kuwait government has called for urgent action to stop the construction of makeshift mosques. It argues that the unlicensed mosques could spread extremism as they are not regulated like state-constructed mosques. Unlicensed “mosque shacks”, as they have been called in the media, are often built cheaply from corrugated galvanised iron and there have been concerns in recent years over their proliferation.
Kuwait’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs blamed government authorities for the spread of such structures, some of which are 30 years old, Kuwait Times reported on Sunday.
The ministry referred to an earlier study calling for new rules on the permitted distance between mosques – intended to stop the proliferation of mosque shacks.
It also allocated KD10 million ($33 million) for the construction of new regulated mosques in locations selected by the Finance Ministry, and transferred construction of those projects from the Ministry of Public Works to the Awqaf ministry.
