Passport and Residency Validity Link To Take Effect January 1
The decision to link the validity period of residence permits with that of the passports of expatriate workers will take effect on Jan 1, 2016 as per Article 12 of Residency Law Number 17/1959 and Article 15 (repeated) of the executive bylaw of Law Number 640/1987 which states the validity of an expatriate’s residence permit should not be later than that of his passport, says Director of the Capital Residency Affairs in the Directorate General for Residency Affairs Lieutenant General Fawaz Al-Roomi.
In a press statement, Al-Roomi affirmed the department is keen on improving its work procedures for the benefit of the public. He explained the abovementioned decision was taken in the interest of the public, affirming the grace period prior to the implementation of the decision is enough for an expatriate to check the expiration date of his passport and rectify his residence status accordingly.
He urged the expatriates to check the validity of their passports, renew them before expiration and then transfer the residence permit to the new passport in case the old one expires before the residence permit.
He also advised the citizens to take the same step for their maids to avoid legal problems.
