There’s a reason this one is making the rounds on Kuwaiti social media today. A Kuwaiti dentist has just picked up an award that no woman from the Gulf has ever won before.

Dr Sarah Khraibet has been named winner of the American Kramer Award, given for excellence in gum surgery and dental implant work. She’s the first Kuwaiti, and the first woman from the Gulf, to receive it since the award began.

⚡ The short version

Dr Sarah Khraibet is Kuwaiti and works in the field of periodontics (gum disease and dental implants).
She has won the American Kramer Award, a prize given each year to just one physician across accredited periodontics specialty programmes in the United States.
She is the first Kuwaiti and the first Gulf woman to win it since the award was established.

Why this award is a big deal

The Kramer Award isn’t handed out widely. Only one doctor wins it each year, selected from accredited periodontal disease programmes across the US. That’s a narrow field, and it makes a win like this stand out well beyond Kuwait’s borders.

For a Kuwaiti woman to be the first from the entire Gulf region to take the prize says something about where Kuwaiti professionals are now competing, and winning, on the global stage.

What this means for Kuwait

Recognition like this tends to reflect well on the wider community of Kuwaiti professionals working abroad in medicine and dentistry. It’s also a nice reminder for anyone in Kuwait sitting in a dentist’s chair that the field has serious talent coming out of this country.
