  • Consumer loans: up to 25× net monthly salary, capped at KWD 25,000, repaid over up to 5 years.
  • Housing loans: up to KWD 70,000 over up to 15 years. Consumer and housing loans together are capped at KWD 95,000.
  • All monthly installments, including credit cards, must stay within 40% of net salary for employees and 30% for retirees.
  • Consumer loan interest is fixed for the whole term and cannot exceed the discount rate + 3%.
  • Balloon (large final) payments are not allowed, and loan insurance is optional with written consent.
  • You can refinance with another bank after repaying at least 30% of the original installments on time.

How is the monthly installment calculated?

Banks in Kuwait use the reducing balance method: interest is charged each month only on what you still owe, so early installments are mostly interest and later ones mostly principal.

Formula: Installment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n), where P is the loan amount, r the monthly rate (annual ÷ 12) and n the number of months.

A flat rate is charged on the full amount for the whole term. It looks lower but costs more: a 3.5% flat rate equals roughly 6.4% reducing over 5 years.

🧮 Example: KWD 10,000 at 5.98% for 60 months = KWD 193.235 a month, KWD 1,594.102 total interest and KWD 11,594.102 repaid in all.

Islamic finance or conventional loan?

Kuwait has 5 Islamic banks offering Sharia-compliant personal finance. The monthly cost is similar; the difference is how the contract works.

Documents you need

  • Valid Civil ID
  • Recent salary certificate addressed to the bank
  • Salary transfer to the bank (required by most banks)
  • Bank statement for the last 3–6 months if requested
  • Ci-Net credit report (pulled by the bank)
  • Expats: valid residency and minimum length of service

Tips to get approved at a better rate

  1. Pay down or lower your credit card limits first — they count toward the 40% limit.
  2. Compare at least 3 banks for the same amount and term; the difference can be hundreds of KWD.
  3. Ask about offers for government employees and the bank's partner employers.
  4. Choose the shortest term your salary allows to cut total interest.
  5. Keep a clean Ci-Net record with no late payments.

Loans for expats in Kuwait

Most local banks give personal and car loans to expats who transfer their salary, usually with a minimum salary of KWD 400–700, lower maximum amounts and a minimum period with the employer. Housing loans are generally for Kuwaiti citizens only.
