Kuwait residential fire kills 9 Asians, injures more than 25
At least nine members of a Pakistani family died and 12 others were injured in a fire that broke out at a house in Farwaniya on Thursday.
A Kuwaiti fire official says nine Asian residents have been killed in a house fire in the oil-rich Gulf country.
Fire Service Directorate spokesman Khalil al-Ameer told The Associated Press that six of those killed in Thursday’s blaze were from a single family. He says more than 25 people were injured, including four firefighters.
The fire happened in a house that had been subdivided into multiple residences in Farwaniya, a suburb 15 kilometers south of the capital, Kuwait City.
Like other wealthy Gulf Arab countries, Kuwait is home to large numbers of guest workers who outnumber the local population.
When they tried to rescue the trapped victims, they discovered that the house was partitioned into several rooms, which was the main reason behind the high number of casualties. Two firefighters who suffered from smoke inhalation were referred to Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital for treatment.
