If youโve ever flown out of Kuwait City Airport late at night, you know the routine: check-in, security, a long wait at the gate, then hours in the air before you land. For one domestic worker heading home to Sri Lanka this week, that routine turned into something nobody on board expected.

Early on Monday morning, a 30-year-old Sri Lankan woman gave birth to a baby boy while her flight was still in the air, somewhere between Kuwait and Colombo. Cabin crew helped deliver the baby. Both mother and son are reported to be doing well.

Itโs the kind of story that makes you pause. It also raises real questions about pregnancy, travel and the rules airlines expect passengers to follow, especially for the thousands of domestic workers who fly between Kuwait and South Asia every month.
- A Sri Lankan domestic worker gave birth mid-flight on Jazeera Airways flight J9-551 from Kuwait to Colombo.
- The woman, from Trincomalee, had travelled to Kuwait in 2024 for domestic work.
- She reportedly did not tell the airline she was pregnant before boarding.
- Mother and baby were taken to hospital in Sri Lanka and are both reported in good health.
What happened on board
The woman boarded Jazeera Airways flight J9-551, which left Kuwait City Airport at 2:52am on Monday, 19 October. She was heading to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake, near Colombo.
At some point during the flight, she went into labour. Cabin crew stepped in to help, and she delivered a baby boy while the plane was still airborne. According to reports, there were no complications during the delivery.
The flightโs captain contacted authorities at Bandaranaike Airport as soon as the birth happened, so ground staff could prepare before the aircraft landed. An ambulance and a medical team, including doctors and nurses, were waiting on the tarmac when the plane touched down.
Once the flight landed, the mother and her newborn were taken straight to Negombo General Hospital for check-ups and further care. As of the latest reports, both are in good health.
Why she didnโt disclose the pregnancy
Reports suggest the woman had not told the airline she was pregnant before the flight. The reason given is that she wanted to avoid the restrictions and medical requirements airlines usually apply to pregnant passengers.
Most airlines, including those flying out of Kuwait, ask pregnant travellers in their final weeks to provide a doctorโs note confirming theyโre fit to fly, or they may restrict travel altogether close to the due date. These rules exist because labour and childbirth can happen without much warning, especially later in pregnancy, and thereโs only so much a flight crew can do at 30,000 feet.
This case shows exactly why those rules matter. It worked out well this time, with help from a trained cabin crew and a quick-thinking captain, but it could have gone very differently without the right support on board.
What this means if youโre in Kuwait
Kuwait is home to a huge number of domestic workers from Sri Lanka, the Philippines, India and elsewhere, many of whom travel back and forth for work contracts, family visits or at the end of their stay. As we reported, <a href=
