Quick heads-up: if youโ€™ve been wanting to start a little garden at home, Al-Omariya Nursery just opened to the public, and seedlings are going for as little as 50 fils. Yes, fils, not dinars.

I know plant shopping doesnโ€™t sound like huge news. But this oneโ€™s worth knowing about, especially with plant imports paused because of regional conditions. This nursery is basically stepping in to fill that gap, and itโ€™s doing it with homegrown stock.

Why is this happening now?

The Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources runs this nursery, and it opened it up for the annual planting season. Normally Kuwait brings in a good chunk of plants from abroad. But imports have paused because of regional conditions, so the authority leaned on its own production instead.

Al-Masbahi, who directs the authorityโ€™s Al-Omariya operation, told Al-Rai that every seedling on offer this season was grown locally. She gave credit to the authorityโ€™s own staff for keeping up the supply while imports were on hold. Honestly, thatโ€™s a nice thing to highlight โ€“ itโ€™s easy to assume everything in Kuwaitโ€™s markets comes from somewhere else, but this shows thereโ€™s real local production happening too.

What can you actually buy there?

A lot, it turns out. Thereโ€™s moringa, arak, sidr, papyrus, jasmine, mint and basil, plus a range of vegetable seedlings if you want to try growing your own food. For flowers, thereโ€™s vinca, petunia and marigold.

If youโ€™re after fruit trees, theyโ€™ve got pomegranate, lemon, orange, grape and mulberry. Thereโ€™s also oleander, roses and other ornamental plants for people who just want something nice to look at. Al-Masbahi said roses in different varieties and colours are coming soon too, along with more types as the season goes on.

The nursery has grouped everything by plant type, with names and prices clearly marked, so youโ€™re not wandering around guessing whatโ€™s what. Shopping carts are available, and staff are there to help, with extra attention given to elderly visitors and people with disabilities.

So who does this actually affect?

Pretty much anyone in Kuwait who likes gardening, whether youโ€™re a citizen or a resident. If youโ€™ve got a balcony, a garden, or even just a sunny windowsill, this is a cheap way to get plants without paying imported-plant prices. Itโ€™s also a decent option if youโ€™re into growing your own herbs or vegetables at home.

The authority says it wants to encourage home gardening and greening efforts across the country, so this isnโ€™t just about selling plants โ€“ itโ€™s part of a bigger push. You can read more local news in Kuwait on things like this from the site.

Opening day apparently saw a strong turnout, enough that the Ministry of Interior had staff on hand just to manage people coming in and out. Al-Masbahi thanked them for that, which tells you this wasnโ€™t a quiet little shop โ€“ people showed up.

Quick answers

How do I pay at the nursery?

Only KNET is accepted. Bring your card, not cash.

How long will the nursery stay open?

It runs until 30 December, open daily from 8am to noon, except Fridays and Saturdays.

Will more plant types be added later?

Yes. Al-Masbahi said new varieties, including several types of roses, are expected in the coming days, with updates announced so people can follow whatโ€™s new.

Is this connected to the recent import changes?

Itโ€™s related to a pause in plant imports tied to regional conditions. If youโ€™re curious about other recent import changes, we covered Kuwait lifting import bans on seven countries too.

If you end up visiting, Iโ€™d go earlier rather than later in the week, since opening day already pulled a crowd. Have you been out to Al-Omariya yet? Let us know what you picked up in the comments.
