You know those nights when the sky over Kuwait is so clear you can actually see stars from your balcony? This week, itโs worth stepping outside and looking up a bit longer than usual.
The Kuwait Astronomical Society says a meteor shower is about to pass over the Earth, and Kuwait is one of the places where it will be visible. Mark your calendar for Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Itโs not a once-in-a-lifetime event, but itโs free, itโs easy, and you donโt need any special equipment. Just a bit of patience and a dark spot.
- Meteors from the Orion constellation (called Orionids) will be visible on Wednesday and Thursday night
- Expect between 10 and 20 meteors an hour
- Best viewing time is 10pm until just before sunrise
- Look towards the east, in the direction of the Orion (the Hunter) constellation
So what exactly are these meteors?
Adel Al-Saadoun, head of the Kuwait Astronomical Society, explained that these meteors are named after the Orion constellation because thatโs where they appear to come from when we see them in the sky.
He said theyโre actually tiny bits of dust and small rocks left behind by Halleyโs Comet. That comet swings close to the sun once every 76 years, then heads off again, leaving a trail of dust, rock and gas along its path.
Every year, as Earth travels around the sun, it passes through this leftover trail. Earthโs gravity pulls some of that dust and rock in, and it enters our atmosphere at a speed of about 66 kilometres per second.
Al-Saadoun said this debris burns up roughly 80 kilometres above the Earthโs surface, well above where aeroplanes fly, so thereโs nothing to worry about from a safety point of view.
Why do meteors glow like that?
Hereโs the part I find genuinely interesting. Al-Saadoun explained that what we actually see burning in the sky is only about a handful of dust, roughly the amount youโd hold in your palm.
Once that dust and rock hits the atmosphere, the air compresses it, the temperature shoots up, and it melts and burns, giving off light as it vaporises. The colours you see depend on what the particles are made of. Iron, magnesium, copper, calcium and potassium all burn in slightly different shades.
So that quick streak of light you spot in the sky is basically a speck of ancient comet dust having its final moment, several decades or longer after Halleyโs Comet passed by.
When and where should you actually look?
According to the Kuwait Astronomical Society, the best time to watch is from 10pm until just before dawn, on both Wednesday and Thursday night.
Youโll want to look towards the east, where the Orion constellation (also called the Hunter, or Al-Jabbar in Arabic) sits in the sky. Thatโs where the meteors will appear to radiate from.
A few simple tips if you want to catch a good show:
- Pick a spot away from bright city lights, somewhere like the coast or the desert edges outside the city
- Give your eyes about 15-20 minutes to adjust to the dark
- No telescope needed, just your eyes and some patience
- Bring a chair or a mat, since youโll be looking up for a while
What this means for stargazers in Kuwait
With rates of 10 to 20 meteors an hour, this isnโt going to be a dramatic fireworks display, but itโs a nice reason to get outside on a cooler October night. Families, photography fans, and anyone who just likes a calm night under the stars should find it worth the effort.
