My real experience getting a personal loan as an expat, with the mistakes I made so you don’t have to.
It was March 2024. I had finally decided to buy a home for my family. It was a big dream, and I needed a loan to make it happen.
“How hard can it be? I’ll walk into a bank, show my Civil ID, and walk out with a loan.”
I was wrong. Very wrong.
Mistake #1: I didn’t check my residency
At the first bank, the officer looked at my Civil ID and said, “Your residency expires soon. Come back after you renew.”
I didn’t know that banks want your residency valid for at least 3 to 6 more months. I went home with nothing.
Then came the paper chase
After renewing, I made a list of everything the bank wanted:
- Civil ID copy (front and back)
- Passport copy
- Salary certificate from my company
- 3 to 6 months of bank statements
- A passport-size photo
Most of it was easy. The salary certificate took 3 days, because I asked HR on Sunday, heard “tomorrow” twice, and finally got it on Wednesday. Not too bad, but it was 3 days I hadn’t planned for.
The salary transfer surprise
I went to another bank because a friend said their rates were good. But they told me, “You need to transfer your salary here first.”
That’s when I learned that most banks in Kuwait want your salary coming into their bank. My salary was already going to Gulf Bank, so I went back there. Everything moved much faster after that.
The trap I almost fell into
Two banks gave me offers. One had a lower interest rate, and I was ready to sign right away.
Then a colleague asked me, “Did you check the fees?”
I hadn’t. When I added up the processing fee, insurance and other charges, the “cheaper” loan was actually more expensive.
That number tells you the truth. Also ask what happens if you want to close the loan early, because some banks charge a penalty.
The day the money came
I signed the contract with Gulf Bank and kept checking my bank app every hour like a crazy person. ๐
What if they say no?
My friend got rejected the first time. He didn’t give up. He asked for a smaller amount over a longer period, and they approved it. Other options are getting a guarantor or trying an Islamic bank (they call it tawarruq financing).
If I could go back, here’s what I’d tell myself
- Check your residency first.
- Get the salary letter from HR early.
- Apply where your salary already goes.
- Clear small debts before applying.
- Keep your account clean, with no bounced payments.
- Never sign before you know the total cost.
Getting a loan in Kuwait isn’t hard once you know the steps. I just wish someone had told me all this before I wasted my first trip.
Bank rules change often, so always confirm the latest details with your bank before applying.
