Steps – How to Protect Your WhatsApp from Fraud, Spam and Hacking

Why your WhatsApp is worth protecting

Ten minutes of settings can stop most WhatsApp scams before they start. WhatsApp holds your contacts, family groups, photos and often your bank and business conversations, so a scammer who gets in can do real damage in minutes.

Most attacks do not break WhatsApp’s encryption. They trick you into handing over a code, a payment or your trust. The good news: that means you can stop them. This guide walks you through the warning signs, the settings to switch on today, and exactly what to do if something goes wrong.

Step by step: lock your account

Two-step verification is the single most important setting; it stops a thief who steals your SMS code. Menu names can vary slightly between Android and iPhone and between app versions.

  1. Turn on two-step verification. Go to Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Turn on. Choose a 6-digit PIN that is not your birthday or 123456.
  2. Add a recovery email. In the same screen, add an email so you can reset the PIN if you forget it.
  3. Set up a passkey. Go to Settings > Account > Passkeys. This lets you log in with your fingerprint, face or screen lock instead of an SMS code.
  4. Lock the app. Go to Settings > Privacy > App lock (Android) or Screen lock (iPhone) and require your fingerprint or Face ID.
  5. Lock sensitive chats. Long-press a private chat and choose Lock chat, so it hides behind your fingerprint.
  6. Check linked devices. Go to Settings > Linked devices. Log out of any computer or browser you do not recognise.
  7. Turn on security notifications. Go to Settings > Account > Security notifications, so you are alerted when a contact’s security code changes.
  8. Keep WhatsApp updated. Install updates from the Play Store or App Store only; never install “modded” versions like GB WhatsApp, which can steal data and get you banned.

Never share your 6-digit SMS code or your two-step PIN with anyone, including people claiming to be WhatsApp support.

Step by step: tighten your privacy

Scammers build convincing stories from your profile photo, status and “last seen”, so limit who can see them. Start with Settings > Privacy > Privacy checkup, which walks you through the main options.

Also review Settings > Privacy > Blocked contacts now and then, and turn off auto-download of media from unknown numbers in Settings > Storage and data.

Stop spam before it spreads

Blocking and reporting takes five seconds and helps WhatsApp ban the account for everyone.

  1. Don’t reply. Even “stop” or “who is this?” confirms your number is active.
  2. Don’t tap links. Shortened links and look-alike sites (for example “whatsap-gift.com”) can steal passwords or install malware.
  3. Block and report. Open the chat, tap the contact name, then Report and Block. For a scam group, use Exit group and Report group.
  4. Don’t forward chain messages. Messages marked “Forwarded many times” are often hoaxes. Check them with a trusted news source first.
  5. Be careful with unknown files. Do not open .apk, .exe or zip files from strangers; they are a common way to plant spyware.
  6. Use Silence unknown callers (see the privacy table) to stop spam calls interrupting you.

Protect your money

No genuine bank, company or government office will ask you for an OTP, PIN, CVV or password on WhatsApp. Use these habits every time money is mentioned.

  1. Verify before you pay. If a friend or relative asks for money, call them on the number you already have, or ask a question only they would know.
  2. Check the business badge. Real companies often have a verified badge; still, find the official number on their website, not in the chat.
  3. Never share OTPs, card numbers or banking PINs, even with someone who “just needs to confirm” your account.
  4. Never pay to receive. Prizes, refunds, jobs and loans that need an upfront fee are scams.
  5. Ignore “guaranteed profit” groups. Real investments carry risk and are never sold through random WhatsApp groups.
  6. Don’t share screens or install apps on request. Screen-sharing and “remote support” apps let fraudsters watch you type your banking details.
  7. Slow down. Scammers rely on panic: “your account will be blocked in 10 minutes”. A real problem can wait for you to call your bank.
  • Save your bank’s official helpline number in your phone today, so you know where to call.

If your account is hacked: act in this order

Speed matters: re-registering your number on your own phone logs the intruder out.

  1. Re-register right away. Open WhatsApp, enter your number and use the SMS code you receive. This kicks the hacker off your account.
  2. If you are asked for a two-step PIN you never set, the hacker set it. Wait out the lock period shown, or reset it through your recovery email if you added one.
  3. Log out all linked devices in Settings > Linked devices.
  4. Warn your contacts by SMS, a call or another app, so they ignore any money requests sent in your name.
  5. Email WhatsApp support at support@whatsapp.com with “Lost/Stolen: Please deactivate my account” and your full phone number in international format.
  6. Call your bank if you shared any card details, OTPs or made a payment. Ask them to block the card and flag the transaction.
  7. Report the crime to your country’s cybercrime authority and keep screenshots of the chats, numbers and payment receipts as evidence.
  8. Secure the account again: set up two-step verification and a passkey as soon as you are back in.

Your 10-minute safety checklist

Tick these off today, then share this guide with the people you care about, especially elderly relatives, who are often targeted.

  • Two-step verification is on, with a recovery email
  • A passkey is set up
  • App lock uses fingerprint or Face ID
  • No unknown devices under Linked devices
  • Profile photo, last seen and groups limited to My contacts
  • Silence unknown callers is on
  • WhatsApp is the official app and up to date
  • My family knows I will never ask for money without calling them

Remember: Stop. Verify. Then act. A scammer only needs you to rush once; you only need to pause once to stay safe.
