If your drive this morning felt a bit thick and grey, that’s not just you. Kuwait is sitting under a humid system that’s bringing patchy rain, the odd rumble of thunder, and fog thick enough to cut visibility right down in parts of the country.
It’s the kind of weather that catches people off guard on the road, especially early morning and after sunset when the fog tends to roll in.
- Humid weather with scattered light rain, possibly thundery, continuing until Sunday morning
- Fog expected in the evening and early morning hours, with visibility dropping below 1,000 metres in some areas
- Winds will be southeasterly to variable, light to moderate
- Conditions should clear gradually through Sunday morning
What’s causing this?
Acting Director of the Meteorological Department, Dhrar Al-Ali, said Kuwait is being affected by an extension of a humid low-pressure system that’s overlapping with an upper-air low-pressure system. That combination is pushing up low and medium-level cloud cover, which is why we’re seeing scattered rain that can turn thundery in some spots.
Al-Ali said the setup is expected to hang around until Sunday morning, after which visibility should gradually improve.
So what does this mean for your commute?
Fog is really the main thing to plan around here. With visibility dropping below 1,000 metres in places during the evening and early morning, it’s worth giving yourself extra time if you’re heading out for Fajr prayers, an early flight, or just the school run.
Keep your headlights on low beam in fog rather than high beam, which just bounces light back at you and makes things worse. And leave more space than usual between you and the car in front – low visibility plus Kuwait’s usual driving speeds isn’t a great mix.
Who should pay attention?
Anyone driving early morning or late evening over the next day or so, basically. If you’re flying out of Kuwait International Airport, it’s also worth checking with your airline, since fog can sometimes cause delays. This follows on from the rain and fog forecast issued earlier this week, so this humid spell has been building for a few days now.
Quick answers
When will the weather clear up?
The Meteorological Department expects visibility to gradually improve during the early morning hours on Sunday.
Will there be thunder?
Possibly. Al-Ali said the rain may be accompanied by thunder in some areas, though it won’t be constant or widespread.
Where can I check live updates?
Al-Ali urged residents to follow the Meteorological Department’s official website, app and social media accounts for the latest forecasts.
Give yourself a few extra minutes on the road this weekend, and if you’ve been caught out in the fog today, let us know how bad it got in your area in the comments.
