A chimpanzeeโs death at Kuwait Zoo has led scientists to the first-ever genetically confirmed case of a dangerous parasite in the country.
The 32-year-old female chimpanzee died in September 2025 after months of declining health. A post-mortem found a cyst roughly the size of a handball sitting in her liver. Lab tests later confirmed it was caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto genotype G1, a parasite that causes a disease called cystic echinococcosis, or hydatid disease. Itโs the first time this parasite has ever been identified through DNA testing in Kuwait, in any animal or human.
This isnโt just a sad story about one zoo animal. Kuwait has long been known as a place where this disease exists in both people and animals, but until now, nobody had actually confirmed the genetic type behind it. That matters for anyone who eats local mutton, keeps a garden, or lives near stray dogs.
