If you’re a Filipino worker in Kuwait, or you know one, here’s a bit of reassuring news out of Manila this week: both governments sat down again to talk about your protection on the job.
It’s not a new law, not a new fee, and nothing you need to act on right now. But it’s worth knowing that these conversations are still happening, because they shape the safeguards that matter when something goes wrong at work.
- Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) officials met Kuwait’s ambassador Meshari Yousef Muhammad Alnibari on 29 September in Mandaluyong City.
- The talks focused on protections for Filipino workers throughout their employment in Kuwait.
- Ambassador Alnibari reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to the rights and safety of Filipino workers.
- No new rules or procedures were announced – this was a diplomatic check-in, not a policy change.
Who was in the room?
On the Philippine side, DMW Undersecretaries Bernard Olalia and Dominique Rubia-Tutay led the discussion, joined by Assistant Secretary Venecio Legaspi and Director Jerome Yason. Kuwait’s delegation, besides Ambassador Alnibari, included First Secretary Ahmed Saadi Aldhafiri and diplomat Meshari Marmah Almutari.
The meeting took place at the DMW’s central office in Mandaluyong City, and both sides described it as focused on safeguards that apply from the moment a Filipino worker signs a contract to work in Kuwait through their entire stay.
Does this actually change anything for expats in Kuwait?
Not directly, and not yet. There’s no new benefit, no new hotline, no new visa rule coming out of this specific meeting. What it does show is that the working relationship between the Philippines and Kuwait on labour protections is still active, which matters given how many Filipinos work here across households, hospitality, healthcare and other sectors.
For Filipino workers already in Kuwait, this is a reminder that your embassy and the DMW are in ongoing contact with Kuwaiti authorities about your rights. If you ever run into a problem with an employer, unpaid wages, or unsafe conditions, this is the kind of relationship that’s supposed to back up the channels you’d use to get help.
Kuwait’s salary protection system is one practical safeguard already in place that’s relevant here, especially if wage payment is ever a concern.
For other expat communities in Kuwait, this news mostly matters as a sign of how Kuwait manages its relationships with labour-sending countries. Similar bilateral discussions happen with other nationalities too, and they tend to shape the kind of protections written into future labour agreements.
What should Filipino workers in Kuwait do now?
Honestly, nothing urgent. But it’s a good moment to make sure you know how to reach the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) or the embassy in Kuwait if you ever need them, and to keep copies of your work contract and any correspondence with your employer. Those are the basics that make it far easier for anyone to help you if a dispute ever comes up.
If you’re not yet in Kuwait but planning to work here, it’s worth reading up on how Kuwait’s visa process works before you sign anything back home.
Have you had to reach out to your embassy or DMW while working in Kuwait? It would help other readers to hear how that went, so feel free to share in the comments.
