Quick heads-up: if youโve ever driven through Al Satwa in Dubai and muttered a few words at that roundabout, youโll want to hear this. Itโs gone. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has turned it into a proper traffic signal junction, and they say itโs already cutting journey times in half.
Anyone whoโs spent time in Dubai knows the one I mean. Al Satwa Roundabout had a reputation as one of the most complicated roundabouts in the whole Gulf โ too many directions feeding in, too much confusion, and queues that could eat up your whole evening. So this change is a genuinely big deal for people who commute through that stretch.

- Al Satwa Roundabout in Dubai is now a signalised intersection instead of a roundabout
- Journey times through the area have dropped by 50 per cent, according to the RTA
- Waiting times and queues during peak hours are down by up to 60 per cent
- The change links in with the separate World Trade Centre Roundabout project nearby
So what actually changed?
The RTA didnโt just put up a traffic light and call it a day. They carried out road and infrastructure upgrades alongside the conversion, reworking how traffic flows through the junction. The intersection handles traffic coming from 2nd December Street towards the Trade Centre and Al Satwa, and the same in reverse. It also links into the smaller streets inside Al Satwa itself.
According to the RTA, the new layout makes it easier for buses to get in and out of the area too, which should mean fewer delays for public transport users, not just private car drivers.
Why would a Kuwait reader care about a Dubai junction?
Fair question. A lot of people here travel to Dubai often, for work, holidays or family visits, and that roundabout has been a known headache for anyone driving around Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Badaโa, Al Jafiliya, Al Hudaiba or Jumeirah. If youโre planning a trip and usually dread that bit of the drive, this is good news โ the RTA says the project improves access to all of those areas.
Itโs also a useful bit of context if you follow traffic and transport news generally. Weโve covered Kuwaitโs own traffic violation numbers before, and itโs interesting to see how a neighbouring Gulf city is tackling its congestion problems โ sometimes with a complete redesign rather than just more rules.
Whatโs the bigger plan here?
This isnโt a one-off fix. The RTA says the Al Satwa conversion is part of a wider set of road upgrades in the area, working alongside the World Trade Centre Roundabout Development Project. That second project is meant to improve the connections between the Dubai World Trade Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road and the roads around it.
Put together, the RTAโs aim is for traffic to move more smoothly between the big main roads and the smaller connecting streets, cutting down congestion at the junctions where everything used to bottleneck.
According to my friends, it has not opened yet, and initially, it will be the most confusing roundabout in the Gulf.
Quick answers
Is Al Satwa Roundabout completely gone?
Yes, based on the RTAโs announcement, the roundabout layout has been replaced with a signalised intersection with traffic lights controlling the flow.
Does this affect bus routes through the area?
The RTA says the new design makes it easier for buses to enter and leave the area, which should help keep public transport running on time.
Will this change affect driving routes to Jumeirah or the Trade Centre?
According to the RTA, access to Sheikh Zayed Road, the Trade Centre, Al Badaโa, Al Jafiliya, Al Hudaiba and Jumeirah should all be smoother because of this project.
If youโre heading to Dubai soon, this is one less thing to worry about on the drive. You can read more international news affecting the Gulf on our site. Have you driven through the new Al Satwa junction yet? Let us know in the comments how it felt compared to the old roundabout.
