Saudi Arabiaโs Civil Defence told people in Riyadh and parts of the Eastern Province to take shelter right away.
The alert came through the National Early Warning Platform on 8 November, warning of possible danger in Riyadh, Buqayq Governorate and Al Ahsa Governorate. Itโs the latest in a string of security alerts across the Kingdom in recent weeks, including the drones intercepted over Madina and the missile debris that fell over Riyadh last month.
- Saudi Civil Defence issued shelter alerts for Riyadh, Buqayq and Al Ahsa on 8 November.
- In later updates, it said the danger had passed in Buqayq, Al Ahsa and Dammam.
- Residents are still told to follow official instructions and avoid gathering or filming.
- Filming or sharing footage of interception efforts or impact sites can lead to legal trouble.
What actually happened
Civil Defenceโs early warning system sent out alerts flagging possible danger in three areas: Riyadh city, Buqayq Governorate and Al Ahsa Governorate, both in the Eastern Province. People in those areas were told to take shelter straight away.
A short time later, Civil Defence followed up to say the danger had passed in Buqayq, Al Ahsa and Dammam. Even so, it kept asking residents to keep following safety instructions and to avoid gathering in crowds or filming anything related to what had happened.
This is part of a wider pattern this autumn. As we reported on 30 October, the US renewed its Saudi Arabia travel alert over airport attack risk, and on 19 October the US Embassy warned Americans across the Gulf about possible flight disruption. These alerts have followed the deadly attack on Riyadh airport in October, which Saudi authorities said killed 12 people and injured over 300.
What to do if you get an alert
Civil Defence posted a clear set of steps on X (formerly Twitter) for anyone who receives a shelter alert. Hereโs the full list:
- Stay calm and follow official instructions only.
- Move straight to the nearest safe place, ideally inside a building or an interior room away from windows.
- Stay indoors until officials say the danger has passed.
- Keep away from open areas, windows, glass, balconies and rooftops.
- If youโre outdoors, go into the nearest building, or take cover behind something solid.
- Avoid crowds, risky locations and taking photos or videos.
- If youโre driving, pull over somewhere safe, away from bridges and tall buildings.
Civil Defence also repeated a clear warning: filming, posting or sharing anything about missile or drone interception efforts, or about where something has landed, can get you into legal trouble. So even if youโre curious, itโs best to just put the phone down and wait for official updates.
Emergency numbers to save now
If you spot anything dangerous yourself, Civil Defence says to call 911 if youโre in Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh or the Eastern Province. Everywhere else in the Kingdom, the number is 998. Itโs worth saving both in your phone if you live in or travel to Saudi Arabia often.
What this means if youโre in Kuwait
Plenty of people in Kuwait have family, friends or work ties in Riyadh and the Eastern Province, so alerts like this matter even if youโre not there yourself. It also comes on top of several other warnings this autumn, including the US alert that named Kuwait among 11 countries flagged for regional risk. If youโre planning travel to Saudi Arabia soon, itโs a good idea to check our international news updates before you fly, and to keep an eye on official Saudi Civil Defence channels rather than relying on social media clips.
Quick answers
Is the danger over now?
Civil Defence said the danger had passed in Buqayq, Al Ahsa and Dammam, but it hasnโt given an all-clear statement for Riyadh in whatโs been reported so far. Keep following official updates.
Can I film or post about whatโs happening?
No. Civil Defence specifically warned that filming or sharing information about interception efforts or impact sites can lead to legal liability. Avoid it even if you see others doing it.
What number do I call in an emergency?
Call 911 in Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh and the Eastern Province. In other parts of Saudi Arabia, call 998.
If youโve got people in Riyadh or the Eastern Province, it might be worth sending them this list today. Has anyone in your circle received one of these alerts recently? Let us know in the comments.
