So, you know how Diwali lights up every street, every home, every WhatsApp status across India this time of year? Itโs not just one countryโs party. Itโs one of the biggest, most awaited days across the whole subcontinent, and it spills right into Kuwait too.
Walk through Abbasiya or Salmiya in the days before Diwali and youโll see it. Sweet shops get busier, saree shops put up extra lights, and group chats fill up with โwhat are your Diwali plansโ messages. It got me thinking: Kuwait has one of the largest Indian communities in the entire Gulf. So why doesnโt the country mark the day officially, even with something small?
- Diwali is one of the most widely celebrated festivals across India and the wider subcontinent, and itโs a major date for people from several other countries too.
- Indians are the biggest expat community in the GCC, and Kuwait is no exception.
- Thereโs a growing conversation about whether Gulf countries, including Kuwait, should give a public holiday โ even half a day โ to mark Diwali.
- No GCC government has announced such a holiday yet, but the idea has real support behind it.
Why Diwali matters so much in the subcontinent
Diwali, also called the festival of lights, is one of the most important days on the calendar for Hindus, and itโs also celebrated in some form by Sikhs, Jains, and even parts of the Buddhist community. It marks the win of light over darkness and good over evil, and families mark it with lamps, fireworks, sweets, new clothes, and time together.
Itโs not limited to India either. Nepal, parts of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Fiji, and Mauritius all see some form of Diwali celebration. Thatโs a huge number of people, across a huge number of countries, all pausing for the same festival around the same week.
In India itself, Diwali is an official public holiday. Offices close, schools shut, and the whole country basically takes a breather to celebrate with family. Thatโs the scale weโre talking about.
So what does this have to do with Kuwait?
Hereโs the part that matters for us. Indians are by far the largest expat group in the GCC, and that includes Kuwait. Weโve written before about how Indians top the numbers among domestic workers in Kuwait, and thatโs just one slice of a much bigger Indian community here โ teachers, engineers, doctors, shop owners, drivers, and families whoโve lived in Kuwait for decades.
For a lot of these people, Diwali is the one day of the year theyโd love to properly stop, cook, dress up, and call family back home without rushing to a work shift afterwards. Right now, unless Diwali happens to fall on a weekend, most Indian workers in Kuwait go through it like any normal working day.
Thatโs where the idea comes in: what if Kuwait, or the GCC as a whole, gave Indian residents a public holiday for Diwali? Even just half a day would change a lot for families trying to fit in a proper celebration.
Why even a half-day would make a real difference
Letโs be honest, a full public holiday for one communityโs festival is a big ask for any government to agree to. But a half-day is a much smaller, simpler idea, and there are good reasons behind it.
- It matches the size of the community. Indians form a very large part of Kuwaitโs workforce and daily life, from private companies to households.
- It respects a festival already tied to light, family, and renewal โ values that fit well with how Kuwait treats its own Gulf traditions and gatherings.
- It helps families actually celebrate together instead of squeezing Diwali rituals into a couple of hours after work.
- Itโs a low-cost gesture with a high emotional return. A half-day off doesnโt disrupt business much, but it tells a huge part of the population that their traditions are seen and valued.
Iโll be upfront about my own view here: I think even a symbolic half-day would be a nice step, not just for Indians but for how Kuwait presents itself as a country thatโs home to so many different backgrounds. What this means for people living in Kuwait
For now, nothing has changed officially. Thereโs no announcement from the Kuwaiti government, or from any other GCC state, about a Diwali public holiday, even a half-day one. This is an idea being discussed, not a confirmed policy.
If youโre Indian and working in Kuwait, Diwali this year will likely be a normal working day unless it lands on your weekend or youโve arranged personal leave. Many families here still make it special in the evenings โ lighting diyas at home, cooking festive food, and video-calling relatives in India.
For non-Indian residents and citizens, itโs worth knowing just how big this day is for your neighbours, colleagues, and friends. A simple โHappy Diwaliโ message goes a long way, and so does flexibility from employers who can give staff an early finish or a lighter workload around the festival.
Quick answers
