Packing your bags for a trip and tucking some extra cash into your carry-on, just in case? If that stash adds up to KD 3,000 or more, there’s a step you can’t skip before you reach the counter.
The General Administration of Customs (GAC) has put out a fresh reminder on its X account: anyone entering or leaving Kuwait carrying KD 3,000 or more in cash, or in bearer negotiable instruments like cheques and bonds, has to declare it. Skip it, and you’re not just risking a scolding at the airport. You’re breaking the law.
- Carrying KD 3,000 or more in cash, or the equivalent in foreign currency, into or out of Kuwait? You must declare it to GAC.
- The rule also covers bearer negotiable financial instruments, not just banknotes.
- Not declaring puts you in breach of Law No. 106/2013 and Minister of Finance Resolution No. 37/2013.
- You can declare electronically through the GAC website or the Sahel app, no need to queue at a counter.
So who actually needs to do this?
This applies to anyone crossing Kuwait’s borders, whether by air, land or sea, while holding funds worth KD 3,000 or more. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Kuwaiti citizen, a resident expat, or just passing through. If the amount in your bag, pocket or hand luggage hits that threshold, the declaration rule kicks in.
It’s worth remembering this isn’t only about physical cash. GAC’s notice specifically mentions bearer negotiable financial instruments, things like certain cheques or bonds that can be cashed by whoever holds them. If you’re travelling with those alongside cash and the combined value reaches KD 3,000, you’re expected to declare the lot.
How do you actually declare it?
GAC has made this fairly painless, at least on paper. You have two options:
- Go to the GAC website and look for
