I came across this today and thought it was worth passing on, especially for anyone with family planning Umrah or a visit to Madinah soon.
The Saudi-led Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen says a Houthi drone targeted a power station in Madinah early on Tuesday, 29 September. The station in question, called Taibah, feeds electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque.
Nothing about this suggests danger to pilgrims right now, but it’s the kind of story that spreads fast on WhatsApp, so here’s what’s actually been said.
- Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Malki says the drone struck the Taibah electricity distribution station at 5:11am on 29 September.
- One power transformer was taken out of service; the wider grid was not affected.
- The station supplies power to the Prophet’s Mosque, according to the coalition.
- The coalition says an investigation, including examination of the drone wreckage, points to Houthi involvement.
What exactly happened?
According to Al-Malki, investigators looked at evidence collected at the scene, including the remains of the drone itself, and concluded the Houthi militia planned and carried out the strike. He described the targeted site as a civilian power facility, not a military one.
The damage, as described by the coalition, was limited: one transformer went offline, but the broader electricity network serving Madinah kept running. There’s no mention in the coalition’s statement of casualties.
Why is this being framed as an attack on the Holy City?
Al-Malki called the strike part of what he described as continued Houthi attempts to target Makkah and Madinah. He said the coalition will keep taking what it called deterrent measures to protect the Two Holy Mosques and the safety of pilgrims visiting both cities.
It’s worth remembering this is the coalition’s version of events and its own attribution of responsibility. No independent confirmation or Houthi response is included in what’s been reported so far.
What this means if you’re in Kuwait
For Kuwait residents planning Umrah or visits to Madinah, there’s nothing here suggesting travel should change. The coalition itself says the mosque’s power supply wasn’t disrupted beyond one transformer, and the wider network stayed up. Still, it’s a reminder that the region around the Two Holy Mosques has seen these kinds of incidents before, so keep an eye on official Saudi and coalition updates if you have travel booked.
For the many Kuwaiti and expat families who travel to Madinah regularly for religious trips, this is more a story to be aware of than one to worry over, at least based on what’s been confirmed so far.
Has anyone here been to Madinah recently or has travel plans coming up? Share what you’re hearing in the comments, it helps other readers get a fuller picture.
