Many people in Kuwait follow news from back home closely, especially stories that touch families and children. A case from West Bengal, India, has been getting attention for just that reason, and it is a difficult one to read.
Police in Murshidabad district arrested a woman after her 4-year-old stepdaughter died. Neighbours say the child had faced abuse for a long time before her death.
- A 4-year-old girl, named by police as Farzana Khatun, died in Sagarpara, Murshidabad district, West Bengal.
- Her stepmother, Mousumi Khatun, has been arrested on suspicion of beating the child to death.
- Neighbours allege the child was abused for a long time, including being denied food and kept from school.
- The body has been sent for autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
What happened in Sagarpara
The incident took place in the Katabari Sarkarpara area, within the Sagarpara police station zone of Murshidabad district. Police said on Sunday that they arrested Mousumi Khatun over the death of her stepdaughter, Farzana Khatun.
According to early information, the child was allegedly beaten on Saturday night. When her condition got worse, she was taken to Sagarpara Primary Health Centre. Doctors there declared her dead on arrival. Police were informed soon after, and the body was sent to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy to confirm how she died.
The childโs birth mother had remarried and moved away about three years earlier, according to local accounts. Her father reportedly lives and works in Kerala, a state in southern India, far from where the child was living with her stepmother.
What relatives and neighbours say
Neighbours in the area allege that Mousumi Khatun had been abusive towards the child for a long time, both physically and mentally. They claim she would not feed Farzana properly and did not let her attend school. They also allege she had beaten the child several times before this latest incident.
A relative of the child, Nurefa Bibi, told reporters that the stepmother tortured Farzana every day, did not feed her enough, and would cover her mouth so she could not cry out. Nurefa Bibi said that when neighbours tried to step in, the stepmother would argue with them instead. She also said the child was often left alone at home all day, with no one allowed to see her.
Nurefa Bibi said that on the morning of the childโs death, she saw Farzana lying in what she described as a lethargic state, with injuries and bruises on her body. She said the stepmother stood holding the child without telling anyone what had happened, and that by the time Farzana reached hospital, doctors had already declared her dead.
These are allegations from neighbours and a relative at this stage. The case is still under investigation, and it will be for a court in India to establish exactly what happened.
Why this story matters here too
Kuwait is home to a large South Asian community, including many families from West Bengal and other parts of India. Stories like this one travel fast across social media and community groups, and they understandably upset people far from home who cannot do much except follow the news.
It also sits alongside other child-abuse and family-violence cases this site has covered, including a case where a mother was arrested after her sonโs death and alleged cover-up, and a case where a housemaidโs death led to a Saudi woman getting a 10-year sentence. Kuwaitโs own courts have also dealt with child-protection cases, including when the top court upheld a 10-year term in a school assault case.
