Chicken and eggs from Pakistan, Bangladesh, the UK, Austria and Argentina can legally head back to Kuwaitโs shelves.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has quietly reshuffled Kuwaitโs poultry import map. Nine fresh decisions, published in the official gazette Kuwait Today, lift bans on seven countries and dozens of regions in the United States and France, while slapping new restrictions on a handful of areas where bird flu has turned up.
If youโve noticed certain imported chicken brands or egg cartons disappear from supermarket shelves over the past year or two, this is the kind of decision that quietly brings them back โ or keeps others out a little longer.
- Kuwait lifted poultry import bans on Austria, Bangladesh, Argentina, the United Kingdom and Pakistan in full.
- Bans were also lifted on 56 regions across 21 US states and 11 regions in France.
- New restrictions were placed on three US regions and one French region after bird flu outbreaks there.
- Heat-treated products that destroy the virus are exempt from the new bans.
So what exactly changed?
The Ministry issued nine separate decisions in total. Seven of them lift restrictions, and two impose new ones.
On the lifting side, the ministry removed bans covering fresh, chilled, frozen and processed poultry meat, along with poultry derivatives, other poultry products and table eggs. These products can now legally enter Kuwait from the cleared regions and countries, as long as they meet the countryโs usual health and safety checks.
The countries getting a clean slate, in full, are Austria, Bangladesh, Argentina, the United Kingdom and Pakistan. On top of that, 56 specific regions spread across 21 US states are cleared, along with 11 regions in France. The ministry said these decisions followed reports that bird flu outbreaks in those areas had ended.
Where are the new restrictions?
At the same time, two decisions introduce fresh bans. Three regions in the United States and one region in France are now off-limits for poultry meat, poultry derivatives and products, and table eggs, after outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were reported there.
These restrictions cover the same range of product types โ fresh, chilled, frozen and processed. Thereโs one important exception though: products that have gone through enough heat treatment to kill the virus are exempt from the ban. So a processed or thoroughly cooked product from one of these regions could still make it to Kuwait, even while raw or lightly processed items from the same area canโt.
All nine decisions took effect from their dates of issuance and publication in the gazette. The ministry has told the relevant authorities to enforce them and make sure the provisions are followed at ports and border points.
Why is Kuwait doing it region by region, not country by country?
This is probably the most useful part of the whole announcement for anyone trying to make sense of it. Kuwait isnโt applying a single blanket ban or a single blanket approval across an entire country. Instead, itโs tracking where outbreaks have actually happened and lifting or imposing restrictions at that level โ a US state might have three regions banned and dozens of others cleared, all at the same time.
That approach lines up with how bird flu actually spreads: in outbreaks tied to specific farms, flocks or areas, not across a whole nation at once. It also means the list of approved and banned regions is likely to keep shifting as outbreaks are reported and resolved elsewhere.
What this means if you live in Kuwait
For most households, this wonโt change whatโs on the shelf overnight. Supermarkets and distributors work through approved suppliers, and it can take time for newly cleared sources to actually show up in local stock.
But over the coming weeks, donโt be surprised if you see poultry products from Pakistan, Bangladesh, the UK, Austria or Argentina reappear, or if import options for certain US and French suppliers widen. If you buy imported eggs or chicken regularly and youโve noticed gaps in your usual brand, this decision is part of the reason why things might loosen up.
On the flip side, if a product you buy comes from one of the newly restricted regions in the US or France, it may disappear from shelves for a while, unless itโs a heat-treated product that qualifies for the exemption.
For businesses โ restaurants, bakeries, food importers โ this is worth checking against supplier lists, since compliance sits with the importer, not just the ministry. You can find more Local news from Kuwait on how these kinds of regulatory shifts affect day-to-day life here.
Quick answers
Does this affect eggs as well as chicken meat?
Yes. The decisions cover poultry meat in all its forms โ fresh, chilled, frozen and processed โ as well as poultry derivatives, other poultry products and table eggs.
Can I still buy products from the newly banned US and French regions?
Only if theyโve undergone sufficient heat treatment to eliminate the avian influenza virus. Raw or lightly processed products from those specific regions are banned.
When did these rules start applying?
Each of the nine decisions took effect from its own date of issuance and publication in the official gazette, Kuwait Today.
Is this the same thing as a full country ban or lift?
Not always. While Austria, Bangladesh, Argentina, the UK and Pakistan are cleared in full, the US and French decisions apply only to specific named regions, not the whole country.
If you spot a change in the poultry or egg brands at your local co-op, itโs worth telling us in the comments โ itโs often the easiest way to see these ministry decisions actually playing out in real life.
