If you’re renting a flat in a residential area and sharing it with a few single male colleagues to split the rent, this is the kind of news that should make you pause.
Kuwait Municipality has just disconnected the electricity supply to four properties in the Capital Governorate because they were being used as bachelor housing inside residential zones, something that’s banned under Kuwait’s housing regulations. The owners had already been warned once. Nothing changed, so the municipality pulled the plug.
This isn’t a one-off sweep either. Inspectors flagged more violations the same day, and officials are signalling that this kind of enforcement will keep going.
- Kuwait Municipality cut electricity to four properties in the Capital Governorate for housing single men in residential areas.
- The properties had been warned beforehand but made no changes, according to Ghanem Al-Shammari, head of the municipality’s inspection team in the Capital Governorate.
- A separate inspection tour on Wednesday recorded two more violations and issued nine warnings in Doha and Sulaibikhat.
- Officials say further action is coming if bachelor housing in residential zones continues.

What exactly happened, and why
Kuwait’s residential areas are legally meant for families, not groups of unrelated single men sharing a flat or house. This rule has been around for years, and the municipality runs regular inspections to catch properties that break it.
According to Al-Shammari, the four properties now without power had already been identified as housing single men. The municipality gave the owners a warning first, which is the usual first step. When the violation wasn’t corrected, inspectors escalated to disconnecting the electricity supply, a measure meant to force the property back into compliance or make it unusable for that purpose.
He said the municipality will keep taking
