If youโ€™ve got a child in a Kuwaiti government school, or you teach in one, thereโ€™s a new reason to pay attention this school year. A fresh national award could put real money in the pockets of the countryโ€™s best students, teachers and school leaders, and the first round of nominations is coming soon.

The Ministry of Education announced the award on Wednesday. It comes on the heels of a string of other school changes this term, including 20 new rules on money, photos and social media and a fresh ban on cash and gifts in schools.

What exactly is this award?

Minister of Education Sayed Jalal Al-Tabtabai signed a ministerial decision setting out who can apply, how winners are judged, and how much they get. The ministry says the goal is to reward national talent, push innovation, and raise the overall quality of education in Kuwait, in line with the countryโ€™s wider sustainable development goals.

Itโ€™s described as a nationwide initiative, not a one-off prize. The ministry says it wants transparency, objectivity and equal opportunity to be at the centre of how winners are picked, which is why the whole process is built around a digital nomination system rather than paper files or personal recommendations.

Who can win, and how much do they get?

The money breaks down across three groups.

  1. Outstanding Learner: 18 students will each receive KD 1,000. Three winners come from each of Kuwaitโ€™s six educational districts, covering primary, intermediate and secondary levels.
  2. Outstanding Teacher: 12 teachers will each receive KD 3,000, the largest individual prize in the scheme.
  3. Outstanding School Administration: 24 people share this category โ€“ six principals getting KD 2,000 each, and 18 assistant principals getting KD 1,000 each.

Add it up and you get the ministryโ€™s headline figure: KD 54,000 across 54 winners. The ministry calls this an effort to make educational excellence a real, tangible national priority, not just a slogan.

What do students need to qualify?

The bar for the Outstanding Learner category is high. Applicants must be Kuwaiti citizens with a clean behavioural record โ€“ no disciplinary penalties or decisions against them at school. On top of that, they need an academic average of at least 95 percent across the three academic years before their nomination. Thatโ€™s three full years of near-perfect grades, so this isnโ€™t an award for a single good semester.

What do teachers need to qualify?

Teachers must be Kuwaiti and actively working for the Ministry of Education when they apply. They need an actual performance evaluation rated
