I came across this today while reading up on GCC travel rules, and I thought it was worth sharing because so many people here pop over to Dubai or Abu Dhabi for a weekend, a wedding, or just to escape the Kuwait heat for a few days. If your trip runs longer than planned, you might not need to rush to the airport just to renew your entry status.
Turns out the UAE lets you extend most visit and tourist visas from inside the country, as long as your sponsor applies for it. No exit stamp, no re-entry needed.
The short version
- Tourist entry permits can be extended, but total stay cannot go beyond 120 days.
- Visits to relatives or friends, or trips to explore business or job opportunities, can stretch to 180 days total.
- Border-area permits, truck driver permits, and permits for workers on tourist ships or pleasure boats cannot be extended at all.
- Extensions must be requested by your sponsor, not by you directly, and fees range roughly from Dh100 to over Dh1,000 depending on the visa type.
So who actually applies for the extension?
This is the part people trip up on. You can’t just walk into an immigration office and ask for more time yourself.
- If you’re on a tourist visa, the travel agency or tourism company that issued it has to submit the extension request.
- If a relative or friend sponsored your visit visa, that same person has to apply on your behalf.
You’ll usually need your passport, a personal photo, and the same documents that were used for the original visa application. If your visa was issued through Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), extensions for single- and multiple-entry tourist visas and for visits to relatives or friends go through that office specifically, under the same overall rules set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP).
What does it actually cost?
The fees depend on which authority issued your visa and what type it is. According to ICP, the listed charges include an application fee of Dh100 and an extension fee of Dh500, with some 14-day visas extended for Dh250. Certain multiple-entry visas tied to Golden or Blue Residency procedures can cost Dh1,000 to extend, and if you’re applying to extend the validity of an entry permit before you even arrive, that’s Dh50.
If your visa came through Dubai’s GDRFA, the extension fee listed is Dh600 plus 5 per cent VAT. On top of that, if the person is already inside the UAE when applying, there can be extra charges: a Dh10 Knowledge Dirham, a Dh10 Innovation Dirham, and a Dh500 inside-country fee. So the final bill really does depend on your specific situation and visa category.
What happens if you just let it expire?
Don’t assume there’s a free grace period once your visit visa runs out. ICP currently lists an overstay fine of Dh50 per day for exceeding your permitted stay or entry-visa validity, and the UAE government’s official portal confirms visitors who overstay will be fined. That adds up fast if you lose track of dates.
What this means if you’re in Kuwait
A lot of us travel to the UAE regularly, whether for work meetings, family visits, or just a change of scenery. If your trip runs long, knowing you can extend from inside the country, rather than having to fly home and re-enter, can save you a rebooking headache and extra flight costs. Just remember the extension has to come from whoever sponsored your visa in the first place, so keep that person or agency in the loop before your visa’s expiry date, not after.
