Farwaniya Raid Finds Bad Food: Nearly 99kg Destroyed

Ever picked up something from a small grocery shop and wondered if it’s actually fine to eat? Turns out, you’re right to wonder sometimes.

The Public Authority for Food and Nutrition (PAFN) just teamed up with the Ministry of Interior for a surprise inspection run across Farwaniya. And they didn’t come back empty-handed.

They found enough bad food to fill up a fair few shopping bags, nearly 99 kilos of it, and it’s all been destroyed now.

    The short version

    • PAFN and the Ministry of Interior ran a joint inspection campaign in Farwaniya Governorate.
    • Inspectors issued 15 violation reports.
    • Three separate reports were filed for damaged or unfit food products.
    • 98.732 kilograms of food was destroyed, and legal action was taken against those responsible.

    So what actually happened?

This was a joint effort, not a random check. PAFN worked alongside the Ministry of Interior to go through shops and stores in Farwaniya, looking for anything that shouldn’t be on the shelves.

By the end of it, they’d handed out 15 violation reports for various breaches of food safety rules. On top of that, three reports were specifically about food that had gone bad or was otherwise unfit to sell. Whatever they found in that category, just under 99 kilograms worth, got destroyed on the spot.

The authorities said legal action has been taken against the shops or individuals responsible. They didn’t name names, and honestly, that’s not really the point here.

What this means if you shop in Farwaniya

If you live in Farwaniya or do your grocery shopping there, this is honestly a good thing to hear, not a scary one. It means someone’s actually checking.

I’d still say it’s worth being a bit careful with small shops you don’t know well, especially with things like dairy, meat and anything that needs proper refrigeration. Check the dates, check the packaging isn’t damaged, and if something smells off or looks off, don’t risk it.

Be careful while shopping at the Friday Market is a good reminder that it pays to keep your eyes open wherever you’re buying from, not just in Farwaniya.

And this is me even who has never checked the even Expiry date.

    Will this keep happening?

PAFN said these inspection campaigns are ongoing and will continue, with the aim of protecting consumer health and making sure shops stick to food safety rules. So this isn’t a one-off, it’s part of a wider push that’s been going on for a while now across different governorates.

Good to know, honestly. Makes you feel a little better about what’s sitting on the shelf next time you pop into your local shop.

Have you ever come across expired or unsafe food at a store near you? Worth reporting it rather than just putting it back on the shelf.
