There’s a reason that in every city or town or suburb of a surburb an open mic will creep into the back corner of a cafe or a district park or somebody’s living room.

Gathering spaces for artists have to be casual and low stakes, and open mics are the best spots to find your next band mate or writing buddy.

If you’re cringing at the open mic, ask yourself what upsets you so much about expression, about trial and error, about figuring it out as you go along.

If you’re stuck, and keep performing the same covers or poems over and over again, ask yourself what’s stopping you from throwing yourself into the deep end of something new.
