Kuwait-based Soumya Gupta and Nayani Bharadwaj will get direct admission in the undergraduate course at Delhi University under the sports quota this year.

Who are Soumya and Nayani?

  • Soumya was an Indian representative at the Junior World Shotgun Championship in Italy, 2015
  • Nayani, on the other hand is a gold medalist in the 10m air pistol event at the Asian Shooting Championship 2015

Admissions at Delhi University:

  • 193 shooters have applied for admission in DU courses, this number was 120 last year
  • 76 boys and 36 girls are eligible for admission post trials and certificate verification
  • DU is sending one of the largest contingents of 10 shooters for the World University Shooting Championship in Poland, this year
  • Several top shooters who want to pursue under-graduation courses opt for DU because it offers support to sports persons

While Nayani and Soumya are among the top 10 international shooters getting direct admission in DU in the sports category, Soumya wishes to get admission in Sri Venkateswara College

Authorities on admission in sports (shooting) quota:

“Promising shooters join colleges but cannot achieve much as there is just one shooting range in Tughlakabad in Delhi. Students can’t attend classes and also practice as the same time. So, one has to either sacrifice studies or his/her sport,” said shooter Jaspal Rana.

On the other hand, Anil Kumar Kalkal director, physical education and sports, DU said, “With such high profile players joining our ranks, the university’s rank in sports will improve. Both the university and sportspersons will benefit by their international exposure.”
