b55489_nA power blackout hit most of the energy-rich Gulf state of Kuwait on Wednesday, disrupting traffic and a number of vital facilities but without affecting oil installations. The electricity and water ministry said a technical problem at one of the country’s five power plants forced it to cut power as a precautionary measure to protect the network, according the Kuna news agency. The ministry said the problem will be repaired and electricity resumed “soon.” Lights went off at buildings, a number of hospitals, along the roads and at Kuwait Airport, according to pictures posted on Twitter. Police patrols have been mobilised to monitor roads and traffic lights, many of which went off, leading to traffic jams. Oil installations, particularly the three refineries, have not been affected by the blackout, an industry source told AFP

  1. I never had any blackout, half of salmya had elecricity

  2. I lived in Kuwait for 4yrs and power would go out often in my apartment but never all of Q8 and solidarity sounds nice but we know some there could care less about the environment.

  3. Some problem like this is inevitable…so having a back-up is a must c",)

  4. This incident has happened for the first time since I came to Kuwait in June-2006. It is remarkable that for all these years, there has been no "power blackout" that I can recollect…..this is a "one-off incident"…..thanks to the Authorities that there was no outward incident during the "blackout"….all "back-up" & "emergency response" worked with "clock-work" precision". In fact, Kuwait should consider "switching-off" Power 1-day every Week or Month for 10-minutes to express their solidarity towards Environment Protection.

  5. Often this happen in Kuwait or first time??????
