Kuwait is considering launching its own satellite as per a proposal by the Gulf country’s Communication and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA), a Kuwaiti newspaper reported on Thursday.

“The cabinet is studying launching a Kuwaiti satellite as per a project presented by CITRA,” the Arabic language daily Alanba said, quoting “senior” sources.

It said CITRA, which manages the telecommunication sector in the OPEC member, proposed the formation of a committee headed by its chairman Salim Al-Odhaina to conduct a feasibility study and determine the financial requirements for the project.

The paper said Odhaina wants the committee to comprise representatives of various government offices in the emirate, including the Ministries of communications, defence and interior as well as other public institutions. The report did not mention the possible uses of the satellite.
