Kuwait ranks 33rd in ‘World Giving Index’

October 29, 20180

The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), in its annual World Giving Index (WGI) on global generosity says there is a significant growth in volunteering and helping a stranger around the world, according to a report issued by the foundation.

The report based on the WGI shows more people across the world are helping a stranger and volunteering time but the proportion of those donating money has declined. Levels of giving across Africa are continuing to grow, confirming a trend which appeared in last year’s Index. While last year’s report showed that every Western country in the top 20 had a lower giving score, this decline has now largely been reversed.

On the CAF WGI 2018 map, Kuwait is ranked 33rd with a score of 43 percent, while the Kingdom of Bahrain is ranked 10th with a score of 53 percent.

The other GCC countries do not feature on the list. The list is topped by Indonesia with a score of 59 percent On the issue of helping a stranger, Kuwait is ranked third with a score of 80 percent, followed by Bahrain in sixth place with 74 percent, Saudi Arabia, eighth with 74 percent and the United Arab Emirates in 16th position, with 68 percent. The list is topped by Libya with 83 percent.

When it comes to donating money to poor individuals Kuwait among the GCC states is ranked 37th with a score of 39 percent. The UAE takes the 11th position with 62 percent, Bahrain 25th with 53 percent and Saudi Arabia 68th with 26 percent. In terms of volunteering time Kuwait is placed at 120 with a score of 11 percent, while the other GCC countries do not feature on the list.

Indonesia tops the CAF World Giving Index for the first time. While its three individual giving scores are largely unchanged on last year, it has moved into the top spot. Polling was carried out in 2017, and so before the earthquake and tsunami which struck the country in September 2018. Myanmar, the most generous country on earth for 2017, fell to 9th place in the rankings, owing largely to a fall in the number of people volunteering.

The United States moved up one place to 4th in the rankings. More than half of people in 146 countries (51.1%) said they helped a stranger, up from 49.6% last year.
